Regarding:  Devastation of Hangover Overlook Campsite at Saddle Tree Gap by U.S. Forest Service

Elevation 5200 feet, Nantahala National Forest, Graham County, North Carolina.

It is our position that the devastatation wrought upon Saddle Tree Gap by the United States Forest Service in clear cutting the Saddle Tree Gap Camping Area of over 100 trees for the purpose of landing a helicopter was unnecessary and unjustified.  We assert the following:

  1. Reasons given by the Forest Service are dubious.  One of the nicest points in the forest was cleared to fight an undocumented wildfire many miles below.
  2. Bob Stratton Bald, an already cleared area could be used for the same purpose and is in close proximity.
  3. This fire was not coordinated through the SACC, typically responsible for coordinating wildfire suppression involving the use of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.
  4. No plans exist to reforest the clear cut.
  5. No injury to any firefighter occurred, eliminating the excuse given by the on duty Ranger, Frank Findley.
  6. This area has been established as a popular and well documented camping spot for decades formerly forested with pure stands of birch and beech trees now decimated.

The SouthernHighlanders are maintaining their request that the Forest Service implement a plan to reforest this area before it evolves into a denuded permanent scar.  Although the damage to the forest is not reversible, we are seeking to mitigate the potential erosion already evident due to lack of tree cover to allow enjoyment of this area for future generations.  We are asking your support in this cause by contacting the United States Forest Service District Supervisor, Mary Sue Hilliard and requesting the immediate reforestation of the popular camping area.
